Why Reading is Important

Why Reading to Young Children Builds More Than a Love of Books
Reading to your child is one of the simplest things you can do—but it can have a lifelong impact.
Long before children learn to read on their own, listening to stories helps build the skills they’ll use in school, friendships, and everyday life.
Reading Helps Children Become Better Learners
When parents read aloud regularly, children begin to:
- Build a larger vocabulary.
- Improve their listening skills.
- Strengthen memory and concentration.
- Understand how stories are organized.
- Develop curiosity and a love of learning.
These early skills make it easier for children to succeed once they begin school.
Reading Builds Problem-Solving Skills
Stories introduce children to characters who face challenges, make mistakes, and find solutions.
As children listen, they naturally begin asking questions:
- What would I do?
- Why did that happen?
- How could they solve the problem?
This kind of thinking helps children become better problem-solvers in real life.
Reading Strengthens Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Books are wonderful tools for teaching children about emotions.
Through stories, children learn about:
- Kindness
- Empathy
- Acceptance
- Friendship
- Cooperation
- Respect
- Confidence
They begin to understand how others feel and discover healthy ways to handle their own emotions.
Reading Creates Better Students
Children who are read to regularly often enter school with stronger language and literacy skills.
Reading together helps children:
- Follow directions.
- Ask thoughtful questions.
- Stay focused longer.
- Build confidence.
- Develop critical thinking skills.
These abilities support learning across every subject—not just reading.
Reading Creates Lifelong Readers
Perhaps the greatest gift of reading together is creating positive memories.
When reading becomes part of a child’s daily routine, books become associated with comfort, love, and time spent together. Many children who enjoy books early continue reading for pleasure as they grow older.
Mylo’s Meadow of Friends
In the Mylo’s Meadow of Friends series by me, Gale Riding, each story is written to entertain while gently teaching important Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) skills such as kindness, empathy, inclusion, friendship, and acceptance.
Children don’t just hear a story—they learn how to care for others, solve everyday problems, and celebrate what makes each of us unique.
Sometimes the greatest lessons aren’t taught in a classroom—they’re discovered one story at a time.
Every book you read today helps build the confident, compassionate, and curious adult your child will become tomorrow.
