What Do Moose Eat? Fun Moose Facts for Kids

Have you ever wondered what a moose likes to eat? If you asked Mylo, he would probably tell you that there’s nothing better than a delicious snack found in the Canadian forest!

Moose are herbivores, which means they eat plants—not meat. In fact, an adult moose can eat up to 50 or 60 pounds of food in a single day during the summer months. That’s about the same weight as a young child! Moose spend much of their day looking for tasty things to munch on. They have big appetites because their enormous bodies need lots of energy.

So, what do moose eat?

During the summer, moose enjoy:

  • Leaves from trees and shrubs
  • Willow leaves
  • Birch leaves
  • Aquatic plants growing in ponds and lakes
  • Tender shoots and grasses
  • Herbs and wild plants

Moose are excellent swimmers and will happily wade into ponds and lakes to eat underwater plants. They can even dip their heads beneath the water to reach their favourite snacks!           illustration from my upcoming book Velvet Visits Mylo coming soon. galeriding.ca
